SAMMY SAY’S…

Early Pick Motueka pours into the glass with a hazy glow that almost looks like a banana milkshake, and, to be fair,  it’s a great first impression. The packaging tries to lean into hop‑leaf imagery and bold colours, but it doesn’t quite work; the idea is clear enough, just not especially appealing. Once poured, though, everything improves. The nose is excellent, full grapefruit and lime, bright and sharp, the kind of aroma that makes you want to get straight into the first sip.

The flavour follows with sweet lemon up front, a touch of mango, and a gentle bitterness that grows as you move down the glass. It’s well balanced, never heavy, and the medium mouthfeel suits it perfectly. This is a good drop, one that delivers far more in the glass than the packaging suggests, and it keeps its footing all the way through.

JYMI SAY’S…

There is no denying it, Motueka is a flippin’ banging hop! This New Zealander brings with it large hits of citrus, mainly lemon and lime. Herbaceous undertones can also come along with this pup, the sweetness of basil or the robust flair of rosemary can fleck across ones palate when Motueka is involved in a brew. And of course, when an NZ hop comes to the party you just know things are gonna be as smooth as the work of a plasterer that charges £5k / hour.

HOWEVER, as good as this hop is, I have never been a fan of it on its own in a single hop beer. Ok, that may only be a handful of times, but it has just always felt like it needs a support act to work off. Which does seem odd considering its flavour profile.

HOWEVER, this is an early pick Motueka! I didn’t even know this was a thing until 11 minutes ago. I assume an early pick means still bringing the quality of hop but possibly less intense? I mean, I would use the google for this very important part of the review, but I’ve used all my www.webcredits/googles on how to spell herbaceous and how many ers there are in plasterer.

Turns out that Two Flints and Beak (this was always gonna work out wasn’t it) know what pick to use when it comes to this hop featuring on its own. This beer is stunning.

The look in glass for EPM is nothing short of exceptional. Followed by a nose that is vibrant and somehow juicy citrus. The texture of this brew is fookin marvellous, thick AND crushable! Is that even possible?! Turns out that it is. Lime is without doubt the front runner in taste but it’s not intense, it’s just there, working beautifully, almost soft lime. The aftertaste is a perfect bittersweet to round off what has come before.

Fantastic work from these two fantastic breweries.

You have to go and find this one folks.
